Mumbai. India’s area under cotton will likely shrink this year as delayed rains have hit plantings, Textile Commissioner A.B. Joshi said Monday.

“Cotton requires at least 90 days. If the monsoon is delayed further, farmers may switch to short-duration crops,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a conference.

India had removed all restrictions on cotton exports earlier this year after a record harvest of 34.7 million bales last season. A bale weighs 170 kilograms.
