The Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (Demic), functioning at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here has advised cotton farmers to take up sowing in mid- August to mid-October.
“August is special season for sowing cotton in Tamil Nadu. Our analysis of the price movement in Konganapuram Cooperative Marketing Society shows that the price of the long staple cotton would hover around Rs 4,800-Rs 5,100 a quintal at harvest in January- February 2014,” say Demic experts.
The masi crop, which is now flowing into the markets in Tamil Nadu is ruling at around Rs 5,200 and Rs 5,500 a quintal (for long staple), source said.
Trade sources are expecting the price to move north in the forthcoming months as the arrivals are expected to become scarce.
