Crop shortage keeps cotton prices steady – 11:05 AM – November 20, 2015

Due to a sizeable shortage estimated in cotton crop during the current season (August 2015 / July 2016), lint pries have recently become steady and stable despite notably poor performance of the domestic textile industry.

Even if the global cotton prices are subdued and mostly range bound, domestic prices in Pakistan remain steadfast.

Due to widespread pest attack and ensuing pestilence which hit the current domestic crop, besides lower output, the Pakistani mills are facing serious quality problems.

During the current season (2015/2016), Pakistan may produce between 11.5 and 12 million bales of cotton (155Kgs). Domestic mills consumption is being quoted to range between 14 and 14.5 million bales.

Imports of cotton may range from two to 2.5 million bales while the exporters may slip anywhere from 300,000 to 400,000 bales of cotton. Mills are reported to have booked anywhere from 1.2 to 1.4 million bales for import till now.

Seed cotton (Kapas/Phutti) prices in Sindh are reported to have ranged between Rs 2400 to Rs 3000 per 40 Kgs, according to the quality, while in the in Punjab they are said to have ranged from Rs 2400 to Rs 3100 per 40 Kgs on Thursday.
