India’s Cotton area falls 12.7% Y/Y

Area sown for Cotton in India fell by a sharp 12.7% from 9.952 million hectares a year earlier to 8.686 million hectares as on 22nd July, 2016 due to scanty rainfall in the Gujarat region, which accounts for 20% of India’s total Cotton production.

Total area under kharif crops, however, reach 69.298 million hectares by 22 July 2016, which is 3.3% higher than the area of 67.101 in the year-ago period. While sowing started on a weak note and was down 5.9% year on year by 8 July, good rainfall in the first two weeks of the month has helped bridge the deficit.
