India Cotton imports may hit record high in 2015-16

India’s Cotton imports are likely to reach an all-time high of more than 1.5 million bales (each of 170 kg) in 2015-16 as domestic supplies have dwindled due to two consecutive droughts in the country, Indian Cotton Federation stated.

The previous highest import of Cotton was 1.46 million bales in 2012-13.

Around 0.7-0.8 million bales have already been imported and that the total imports could go up to 1.8 million bales, it said.

India’s Cotton production in 2015-16 is expected to decline to 33.8 million bales from 38.6 million bales, a fall of more than 12%.
